Cleaning Materials Guide for Bali Villa Finishes

What cleaning products work on Bali's common finish materials — and what causes permanent damage.

In this guide I want to go through the finish materials most commonly found in Bali villa renovations and construction, and explain what cleaning products work correctly on each — and what causes permanent damage. This is useful both for post-construction cleaning and for ongoing villa maintenance.

Polished Concrete

Use: pH-neutral stone cleaner, clean water mop, microfibre pad. Avoid: any acid-based cleaner, bleach, ammonia-based products. Acid cleaners and bleach dull the polished surface. Standard bathroom cleaners used on polished concrete floors — a very common mistake — produce a visible matte patch within the shiny surface that requires mechanical re-polishing to correct.

Marble and Natural Stone (Polished)

Use: pH-neutral stone-specific cleaner only. Diluted dish soap in water is acceptable for general cleaning. Avoid strictly: all acidic products including vinegar, lemon, standard bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners, limescale removers. Acid + calcium carbonate (the mineral in marble) = chemical etching, visible immediately as a dull spot. Even a brief contact with citric acid from a spilled drink etches polished marble visibly.

Terracotta and Unglazed Tile

Use: mild all-purpose cleaner, well-diluted. Pre-wet the tile surface before applying cleaner to reduce absorption into the porous surface. Avoid: bleach (discolours terracotta), acid cleaners (can damage fired clay surface), leaving cleaning solution on the surface — always rinse thoroughly. New terracotta tiles that haven't been sealed absorb staining agents immediately — seal before any liquid cleaning on new installations.

Timber Floors (Engineered and Solid)

Use: purpose-made timber floor cleaner, barely-damp mop (wring out thoroughly), immediate dry-wipe. Avoid: wet mopping, steam mops, vinegar-water solutions (acidic), ammonia. Standing water on timber causes joint swelling, surface lifting and finish damage. Steam mops — popular for general cleaning — introduce moisture and heat that damage timber finish and cause joint gaps in engineered boards. Timber floors in Bali need to be cleaned carefully given the humidity differential between dry and wet season already stresses the wood.

Ceramic and Porcelain Tile

Use: all-purpose cleaner at label dilution. Mild acid-based grout cleaner is acceptable on grout (not on polished porcelain with a high-gloss finish). Avoid: abrasive pads on polished porcelain — they scratch the surface finish. Standard ceramic tile is the most tolerant of cleaning products in the Bali villa material set.
